What this map covers

This view of Stoke on Trent also covers Newcastle-under-Lyme, Longton and Burslem.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 12 · Cheshire, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Stoke on Trent rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps. The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail.

Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape. This particular source was published in 1902.
