A mug featuring Bartholomew's distinctive Half-Inch mapping of Sugar Loaf / Pen y Fal and the surrounding area.

What this map covers

The historic mapping around Sugar Loaf / Pen y Fal reaches into Bannau Brycheiniog National Park and also includes Sugar Loaf. It also takes in Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Gilwern and Llanbedr.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 23 · Hereford, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Sugar Loaf / Pen y Fal rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail. Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903.

At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. This particular source was published in 1902.
