What this map covers
This view of Thirlmere takes in part of Lake District National Park, alongside White Side. It also takes in Legburthwaite, Watendlath, Thirlspot and Fisher Place.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 3 · The Lake District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Thirlmere rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
The interest is often in the regional pattern: how a town relates to neighbouring places, transport routes, water, and higher ground. Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps.
Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. This particular source was published in 1903.
