About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 3 · The Lake District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Ullswater rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Complete coverage of Great Britain was achieved by 1903, and the series became closely associated with touring and cycling in the early twentieth century. Bartholomew's Half-Inch maps were made as practical regional maps, keeping towns, roads, railways, and the physical landscape readable across a generous stretch of country.
Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. The series is especially recognisable for its layer colouring, with greens across lower ground and browns and paler tones used as elevation rises. This particular source was published in 1903.

Historic map detail varies with product size and material. Use the listing close-ups as your guide to the exact crop and level of detail.
- Colours may print slightly warmer because of the base material.
