About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 9 · Sheffield, 1904, focusing the original cartography around Wakefield rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Two miles are represented by one inch on the map, giving enough reach for a journey or region while keeping individual towns and routes legible. The Half-Inch series was designed to make a wide area useful to the traveller, showing how settlements, routes, and terrain fitted together rather than concentrating on property-level detail.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. This particular source was published in 1904.
