What this map covers
Windermere is shown within a wider mapped area that includes Bowness-on-Windermere, Ambleside and Troutbeck Bridge and part of Lake District National Park.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 3 · The Lake District, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Windermere rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
At half an inch to the mile (1:126,720), it covers much more ground than the detailed Ordnance Survey county sheets while retaining a strong sense of local geography. It is a scale particularly suited to following roads and railways between places while still reading coast, rivers, uplands, and the broader shape of the landscape.
The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Road information and coloured relief were deliberately prominent, giving these maps a clearer travelling-map character than denser large-scale survey sheets. This particular source was published in 1903.

Historic map detail varies with product size and material. Use the listing close-ups as your guide to the exact crop and level of detail.
