What this map covers

This historic view of Wolverhampton takes in Willenhall, Bilston and Wednesfield, with Sedgley Beacon also part of the mapped landscape.

About this map

This artwork is cropped from Sheet 17 · Shropshire, 1903, focusing the original cartography around Wolverhampton rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.

Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.

The maps were not simple reductions of Ordnance Survey sheets: Bartholomew selected and added information, including route categories useful to travellers. Look for the relationship between settlements and routes, and for the way the relief colours turn the surrounding terrain into part of the map's story. This particular source was published in 1903.
