What this map covers
Alongside Worcestershire Beacon, the map includes Malvern, West Malvern, Malvern Wells and Mathon and part of the landscape of Malvern Hills National Landscape.
About this map
This artwork is cropped from Sheet 23 · Hereford, 1902, focusing the original cartography around Worcestershire Beacon rather than reproducing the complete historic sheet.
Its 1:126,720 scale, two miles to the inch, sits between detailed local survey mapping and much smaller national maps. Bartholomew developed the Half-Inch series for people who needed to understand a region at a glance, with transport routes and physical geography given particular emphasis.
Bartholomew drew on more detailed Ordnance Survey material, selecting and supplementing information for its own cartographic purpose; complete Half-Inch coverage of Great Britain was achieved in 1903. The interest is often in the regional pattern: how a town relates to neighbouring places, transport routes, water, and higher ground. This particular source was published in 1902.
